The year is 1916, and pretentious western actors Dusty Bottoms (Chevy Chase), Lucky Day (Steve Martin), and Ned Nederlander (Martin Short) have just lost their acting positions. At roughly the same time, naive Mexican villagers, believing them to be actual gunslingers, seek their assistance to deal with a band of ruffians plaguing the village. Mistaking the plea for a job offer, the three accept with great bravado. When they arrive at the village, they are greeted warmly and give rousing speeches to the inhabitants. They learn of the leader of the bandit gang, a man named El Guapo, who they assume is an actor. However, during a confrontation with him and his men, they learn that what they had thought was merely acting is in fact deadly real. In order to save the village, the three must attempt to become the actual heroes which they had previously only portrayed.
