Netbeans Tools –> Options Dialog Does not Show

Posted on October 14th, 2010 in Hardware & Software by andrija

I just had a very annoying issue – in my Netbeans 6.9 I was unable to open – or as it turns out, see the β€œoptions” window which is under the Tools menu and is obviously quite important. Not much info on the web so I am posting my solution here. If you delete the file (should be the only one in that directory) that is found in .netbeans/6.9/config/Preferences/org/netbeans/modules/options (and this is in your user home directory) and restart the Netbeans, you should be able to see Options menu again.

Turns out it somehow sets the window position outside the desktop space. My guess is this happens with dual monitor setup when one of the monitors is disconnected. Just a hunch but it would make sense.

I think your hunch is correct. I go between dual monitors and single-screen when I take my work laptop home, and that seemed to cause the issue for me.

Thanks for the fix! (It worked perfectly.)

thank you so much, I was stuck on this one. Works with netbeans7 too and is indeed related to dual monitor: the file contains the line OptionsX=-1100 beacause the option dialog was lastly displayed on the second monitor at work while i am now trying to open it on the primary monitor of my portable here at home. Can confirm this fixed my problem with netbeans versions 6.9.1 and 7.0. I run a dual screen setup, and had a hunch this was the problem as well, however couldn’t find anyway to fix it or grab the window outside my desktop area.
    Thanks for the fix!

An another way to retrieve a lost dialog:

    1) Make the dialog “visible” (but hidden somewhere outside the screen viewport) .
2)Use “alt-Space” to display the dialog menu
3)Type “M” to select the Move item.
4)Use the arrows to move the dialog. This will move and lock the dialog under your mouse pointer.
    5) Use the mouse to drag the dialog at the desire position and click.

This will work with any “lost” dialog.
