Windows Vista – it Really does Suck

April 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Hardware & Software

Install the following updates – released on April 9 – only if you feel brave.  The KB948590 causes BSOD upon boot (OS will not boot).  And the KB938371 (the same one causing trouble some two months ago, in a slightly different edition probably!) will cause your mouse to stop working if you let the OS attempt to "update drivers for a device" (which you will be prompted for every time upon boot or even upon plugging in any USB device).

I am not sure if any commentary is needed.  Two major showstopper bugs like that released in ONE day surely qualify as appalling, disastrous performance from Microsoft.  I will very seriously consider going back to XP now, or switching to Mac OS X.

Dang, good thing I turned off automatic updates on my Vista machine. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — that’s how I’ve been approaching Windows for a long time, now, due to rubbish releases like this.

I had to disable those two updates permanently. And I had more problems on Sunday as I was trying to run the Sun Java Certified Programmer test exam on the PC. The exam run fine but I wasn’t able to review answers as it kept throwing exceptions complaining about “default printer not set” or something, which most definitely isn’t true. I wasn’t even able to save the results and I had to redo the exam on a virtual PC running XP. Vista, at least 64-bit, is really unreliable and seems to let me down when I need it the most.
